Those 299 Euro are including 19% sales tax, while the US price is EXCLUDING sales tax.
So at current exchange rates, that comes out to 371 USD. Still nasty. But only a few weeks ago, it would have been only 325 USD.
Perhaps Apple will lower the price at the same time content finally becomes available in Europe and the Apple TV actually makes sense for European customers. It would make more sense from a marketing perspective, methinks.

It’s definetly too much in Europe, but the german price already contains sales tax. And I’m pretty sure that the price will be reduced in Europe too, once the new procucts from iTunes store become available in Europe too.
But also 229 EUR including sales tax is still far more expensive than the US price. But not twice as much.

Yeah ripoff in Australia as well 449 AUD = 404 USD or 1.76 times the price.

That’s because Apple can make money on movie rentals in US, thus selling the unit for cost, or less. Their target is gaining marketshare in the video business.

Thats nothing Apple have over priced the Mac Tower Pro by $1000 Aus in Australia, this is to help fund building their own stores. Customers buying 3-5 machines are presently going off shore, but I guess this does not faze Apple investors so I am sure nothing will be done about it. Gone are the days when you see Apple discounts and sales promotions.
